KENYA - Kenya's highlands

John Kariuki

Highlights:

Samburu National Park:

Samburu National Park is situated in the arid and rugged part of the country, north of Mount Kenya and the Equator. The reserve is watered by river Ewaso Nyiro which apart from supporting life in this dry area, home to an impressive population of crocodiles, usually seen sunning on the banks. Along the riverbed the rare Doum Palms dot the otherwise scrubby, dry landscape adding to the beauty of the scenery. Rolling hills form a stunning backdrop to the landscape. The reserve is visited by large herds of elephants, drawn by the promise of water. The Samburu region is the best place to find the endemic Northern species including Gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Grevy`s zebra. Birdlife too, is prolific with the Somali Ostrich dominating the plains.
