Why weigh yourself down with unnecessary luggage? Travel light, travel easily and, above all, travel cheaply. If you want to make the most of low cost flights, make sure you don’t end up paying a fortune for your baggage.

I run painting holidays, a gite and a B&B in rural France and many of my guests ask me what to pack when they book a holiday with us – others don’t and should have done! One poor lady turned up in June with only a sunbathing wardrobe! It was cool at the time, if not chilly, cloudy and wet. Now, if she had asked me I’d have told her that the weather in Limousin is unpredictable – more-so with global warming and climate changes. It could be so hot and sunny that you can hardly move, but also we can have ‘British weather’ too. The secret, I’d have told her, is to layer.

Other guests want to know what will be provided in the gite or B&B, still others need to know if they should bring wellington boots etc All good questions.

It was in response to this problem that I sat down to produce a guide to packing for a vacation in France and a packing list. Of course the list is limited to places like France – probably it will be found to be sadly lacking for someone who’s going to paddle a canoe up the Amazon. Nor is it suitable for sport holidays or trips to smart capital cities for socialites. Disco Queens will think it a bizarre selection.

No, this list is aimed at the sort of people who come to rural France. There is nowhere to get dressed up here. Stilettos are redundant. There are plenty of sports to enoy, but all specialist equipment can be hired so you just need a selection of sensible clothing.

Also, think clearly about just how much stuff you can wear in, say, a week. You don’t need 20 T-shirts!

Have a look at this list and let me know what you think. There’s a section where you can add your holiday ‘must haves’ – feel free to do so!

Happy Packing …
